🚗 From Malaga Airport to Granada with a Rental Car

There are many car rental companies at Malaga Airport, making it easy to pick up a vehicle upon arrival. Once you have your rental car, you can choose between two main routes to reach Sierra Nevada (Granada).

Coastal Route

Via the A-7 motorway, you will drive along the eastern coast of Málaga province until reaching the town of Motril. From there, you must take the A-44 motorway and continue uphill towards Granada. Once in Granada, take the exit to the A-395 national road, which leads directly to the ski resort.

At MarbeTaxi, we do not recommend this route, as it is longer and usually adds an extra 15–20 minutes to the journey. Travelers expecting a scenic coastal drive with Mediterranean Sea views may be disappointed, as the sea is barely visible along most sections of the coastal motorway.

Inland Route

By taking the A-45 motorway (or the AP-46 toll road if preferred) towards Antequera, you will head inland until reaching the A-92M motorway junction at Puerto de Las Pedrizas, which you should take in the direction of Granada. From there, continue on the A-92 and later the A-92G.

Once in Granada, take the GR-30 ring road towards Sierra Nevada and finally exit onto the A-395 national road, which leads directly to the ski resort. This route covers approximately 170 km and takes around two hours, making it the fastest and most efficient option.

🚘 Uber in Sierra Nevada

There is no Uber or Bolt service available in Sierra Nevada. However, both services operate in the city of Granada and are also available at Malaga Airport, where you can easily request an Uber upon arrival.

Malaga to Sierra Nevada

The journey from Malaga Airport to Sierra Nevada covers approximately 170 km and takes about two hours, with the majority of the route following modern dual carriageways. The standard route heads inland through the province of Malaga, ascending via the free A-45 highway (or the A-46 toll road) and continuing along the A-92 toward Granada. An alternative coastal route exists; however, it is slightly longer, requires more travel time, and is generally considered less scenic than the inland mountain route.

What makes Sierra Nevada so special?

Sierra Nevada, in Granada, possesses a series of qualities that make it unique in Europe and the world.

Climate

The fact that this ski resort is located in Andalusia (Spain) at the southernmost latitude of Europe makes it one of the ski stations that enjoys the most sunshine hours during the winter season. Due to its geographical altitude (situated at 2,100 meters above sea level at its lowest point), it receives enough snow for winter activities while maintaining a mild climate. It is common to see skiers in light clothing and, on special occasions, even summer attire. Additionally, it is one of the few resorts that allows night skiing, thanks to powerful eco-responsible cold spotlights that let you enjoy the slopes under a starry sky.

Services

The Sierra Nevada ski resort is a modern station equipped with a wide range of accommodations, infrastructure, and excellent access roads.

Modern infrastructure and access to Sierra Nevada

It was modernized in 1995 to host the World Winter Games and has since continued to grow in both the services provided to visitors and their modernization. It is well-known for its variety of alternative winter activities beyond skiing, its restaurants, and its famous nightlife.

Nature

Sierra Nevada is an alpine oasis within a continentalized Mediterranean climate due to its height—the highest in the Iberian Peninsula. Its highest point, the Mulhacén peak, exceeds 3,400 meters above sea level. This creates an ecosystem totally isolated from its surroundings, boasting the highest number of endemic species in Europe. Because of its ecology and unique qualities, you won’t find another place like it to enjoy landscapes, hiking, and nature activities under such spectacular environmental conditions.

Nearby Places of Interest

Just half an hour from the ski resort, at a distance of about 30 km by road, you can enjoy the city of Granada, which deserves a separate post. Granada is one of the wonders of humanity and probably the most beautiful and interesting city in Spain (with all due respect to other Andalusian cities like Malaga, Seville, and Cordoba). Furthermore, 50 kilometers further, you can enjoy the beaches of the Costa Tropical of Granada in towns like Salobreña, Motril, or Almuñécar. In spring, it is literally possible to ski in the morning in Sierra Nevada and, after a one-hour-and-fifteen-minute drive, enjoy a swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean. If you still have energy and time, on your way back to your accommodation, you could still stop in Granada to enjoy its tapas and vibrant nightlife.
